Admission Exceptions

There are a very limited number of "exceptions" to admission requirements available for special cases. If you have questions about your special circumstances, please contact Graduate Student Services.

Examples of Exceptions:

Under-representation in Libraries: The Florida State University is committed to increasing the proportion of applicants who have historically been under-represented among Florida's libraries. Applicants representing such groups will be considered for exception to the general admissions criteria

GPA and GRE:

  • A 3.0 for a master's degree from an accredited university can overcome any deficiency in an undergraduate grade point average.

  • If both your grade point average (GPA) and your Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores do not meet the minimum requirements, we can reconsider your application based on other factors, such as exceptional experience relevant to academic achievement, employment, and your potential in the profession. In that event, submit three (3) letters of recommendation. Sometimes students have gone through a maturation process that is not reflected in their earlier academic record. We are interested in encouraging students who show promise for successful graduate performance.

Unaccredited Undergraduate Degree: If you have received your undergraduate degree from an unaccredited institution, but your GRE scores meet the minimum requirement, we can consider your application. Typically, students in these circumstances will be admitted provisionally and are required to take a minimum of 9 hours the first semester and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0.
