Registration for Classes

You may have some questions about the process of registering for classes at FSU. The following information addresses some of the topics that frequently cause confusion for prospective students. If you have additional questions about registration related topics not answered by the information below, please contact:

Academic Advising/ Plan of Study: At orientation, which your are required to attend, you will be assigned a faculty advisor. It is recommended that you contact this faculty advisor and develop a Plan of Study. This plan of study will be a systematic way to help you chart your progress to your degree.

Online and TouchTone Registration: The University has implemented an online registration system in addition to the TouchTone Telephone registration that has been available for some time. The Online Registration Guide contains everything that was previously offered in the print version of the guide, including the academic calendar, registration windows, web and telephone registration worksheets, fee information and other registration information. The Guide is available at http://registrar.fsu.edu You will find it in the "More Information" toolbar on the right of the page.

Online Courses: Unfortunately, it is easy to become confused about registration and tuition issues related to the three different types of courses we offer. This confusion is the byproduct of legislation, changes in governance for the State University System, and evolving policies at The Florida State University. The following information should help clarify the situation. If you are still in doubt, please feel free to contact Undergraduate or Graduate Student Services.

Face-to-Face Courses: Distance students ARE allowed to register for face-to-face classes on-campus on a space available basis. Distance students pay the on-campus tuition rate for these courses.

Online Courses: On-campus students ARE allowed to register for the online version of a course on a space available basis. Graduate and undergraduate tuition for these online courses is handled differently:

On-campus graduate students pay the distance tuition rate
On-campus undergraduates pay the on-campus tuition rate.

Graduate Courses Only Online: Some graduate courses may only be offered online. There may be no face-to-face version of these courses. When that is the case, an on-campus student pays the on-campus tuition rate. Distance students pay distance tuition rates.

Panama City Campus Issues: Panama City students can only register for classes through the Panama City Campus, and they are subject to Panama City Campus fees. Seats in Panama City sections of courses can not be released to main campus or distance campus students.

Manual Registration for Internships and DIS: If you plan to do an internship or a directed independent study (DIS), the registration for those courses must be done manually by a member of the College's staff. Contact Undergraduate or Graduate Student Services linked above for assistance with these manual registrations. Note: You can still use the online registration system for your other courses.

Prerequisites: It is your responsibility to check to see if you have met all the prerequisites for a course before you register for it. Information about prerequisites can be found in the course descriptions for each program. Look under "Course Descriptions" on the introductory pages for Prospective Undergraduate Students and Prospective Graduate Students. Note: Students who do not have the prerequisites will be dropped.

Immunization: Students who are planning to take courses on-campus are required to present documented proof of immunity against measles (Rubella and Rubeola). Students at a distance who are only taking their courses at a distance are not required to supply this information. If you are in doubt about your responsibility for this proof, please contact Undergraduate or Graduate Student Services through the links above. Information about the immunization policy can be found at the Thagard Health Center.
