MP3: Capps prepared a presentation on the MP3 (an audio file) and Napster (a database listing) and the problems it presents for the School. To date only the TSS and Admin. Teams' have discussed the MP3. The major problem; (1) Downloading illegal software violation. The team discussed; do we want to make a statement about downloading MP3s to state computers? It was mentioned that students, faculty and staff have signed agreements stating that they won't download illegal software. The team suggested sending out an information piece to clarify peoples understanding. Also discussed: what should be done to people who know the policies and continue to violate the them. The team agreed that the School needs to be protected. Possible consequences for students violating these rules, loss of email account, expulsion from the university, police etc. A SOLUTION: Uninstalling Napster on the Schools computers. CONCERN: Creating an unfriendly work environment for students, staff and faculty. RECOMMENDATIONS: (1) Reiterate and support the University's policy and abide by it. (2) Clean the computers; get rid of the violations. (3) Have an announcement that periodically reminds what is the University's policy (4) Advise people that any recording on machines may be illegal. (5) Redesign the School's website to include these policies. (6) Make sure the School complies with the University policy. Capps will write up an informational piece. GRADUATE ASSISTANT ASSIGNMENTS: Burnett, K., discussed the need for a centralized base to monitor GAs' assignments. The sub team will: (1) look at pay ranges (2) have someone from the University come and talk about what is an assistantship (3) examine the possibilities of offering both fellowships and assistantships.
