Per Agenda item I. A). PH.D. Application and admission standards: RE: TOEFL score requirement of 600 or higher:The TOEFL exam utilizes two scoring systems depending on whether or not the test is taken on "paper" or online: A 600 score (paper) equals a 250 score (online). (Action : Marion to get stats - insert). (Action: Lixin to check % for higher scores). Provisional admission will/may be granted if Ph.D. students take a tutorial on English/writing. (Action: Dan will check if there is University support for second language tutorial for Ph.D. students). RE: Prefer GRE of 1000 AND/OR GPA of 3.0 or higher for this program For GRE - Chatman suggested use of minimal score. McClure wants "and" instead of "or" The Applicant must have a Minimum score of 1000 on any 2 of 3 sections of the GRE. (Applicant must take all 3 sections - combined score of verbal and either quantitative or logic). RE: Interview with Ph.D. applicant. There should be two faculty members at all interviews; i.e. a doctoral team member and a faculty sponsor. Chatman, McClure - encouraged an invitation to other faculty (3-4 ) to balance meeting. The applicant should also meet with other doctoral students in the program who provide feedback to the admission committee. (Action: Laurie rewrite: Create a formal schedule for the interview as well as lunch (with doctoral students) and meeting with other faculty). RE:Applicants' provision of a recent paper or of a summary and analysis of a recent article related to their interests. The paper addresses TOEFL for international students, and addresses the "fit" of the applicant with faculty. RE: The personal statement of the applicant. The personal statement (preferably electronic) should address the following: a). Reasons for the applicant's interest in a Ph.D. program and specifically the program at FSU. b). Inventory of specific and unique skills that the person would bring to the program OR would like to enhance by attending FSU's program. c). Applicant's areas of research interest in information studies. d). Expectation of what they would do after completing the Ph.D. (Action: check online application from University) The admission committee holds the right to reject an otherwise qualified applicant due to a). no "fit" (i.e. applicant having an interest in topics/areas for which the faculty have knowledge or skills), or b). no faculty to advise the applicant in their topic or area of research. The admission committee will offer options to the applicant before closing door. The co-ordinator has final say if the applicant falls in the "no fit" category. The deadline to apply for admission?
