Old Business:
A. Update on Research Collaboration Tracking System - Gluck indicated the Research Collaboration Tracking System is working well.
B. Update on Research Collaboration Syllabus - Gross presented the form for discussion and suggested correction. Gluck felt is was acceptable with a few minor corrections in wording. McClure suggested the wording under Required Texts be changed to "there will be readings to do". McClure brought up the possibility of the need for stipulation for one faculty member of the research team be responsible for the paper work between the student and team. McClure questions how to ensure follow-through by faculty on the course outline. It was decided that the projects would be subject to the final approval of the Doctoral Coordinator. The number of possible credit hours for a student to take was indicated as having no maximum but the Chair of the APC would oversee the registration of the various research projects. McClure moved to accept the syllabus, Yu seconded and the syllabus was approved.
C. Clarification on Ph.D. Guidelines - Gluck reported the guidelines were continuing to be edited with additional appendices to be added. He indicated when finished, the guidelines will go online in html and pdf files.
A. Unsatisfactory Portfolio review - Gluck stated that if an unsatisfactory is given for a portfolio, the student is allowed to correct the situation until the review held the following year, thus giving the student an opportunity to improve performance. Counseling would be provided for the student following the first unsatisfactory. Yu asked about a student that must be inactive for a portion of the program. Gluck indicated that by giving the student a second year to improve, that would enable the student to overcome unforseen events in their lives. If two unsatisfactories are received, the student would then be removed from the program. Gross suggested this would be fair in that a student should not be evaluated without consequences. It would also address the problem of students who prolong the taking of preliminary exams. McClure moved to accept the amended review process, subject to approval of the faculty. The motion passed following a second by Yu.
McClure announced the March Brown Bag would be organized by the doctoral students rather than the Institute.
