Doctoral Team Meeting

College of Information

September 7, 1999

Minutes

The meeting was called to order by Chair, Myke Gluck at 11:05 AM.

Present: Myke Gluck (Coordinator), Elfreda Chatman, Melissa Gross, Chuck McClure, Bill Summers, Jane Robbins (Ex-Officio), Laurie Bonnice (Doctoral Student Rep).

Absent: Eileen Smith and Marion Davis.

Call for Team Coordinator:

Gluck called for a team coordinator to commence the academic year. Unanimously Gluck is appointed to continue as coordinator of the team.

Per Agenda Item I - Pending Business:

A. Regarding the two-year cycle of courses, Summers reported that a document was submitted. However, the document was incomplete.

B. Summers proposed a different name be assigned rather than Research Practicum in that the focus is not on education practitioners.

C. Summers discussed the idea that the Administration Seminar was going to be dropped from the curriculum in that more appropriate topics might be offered in light of the focus on research. Discussion also centered on dropping the Resources and Services seminar. It was suggested that the Administration Seminar be replaced with a Graduate Research seminar.

Action: Gluck suggested that Summers look at the two-year cycle of courses as well as course names. Chatman volunteered to work with Summers on the document. Robbins suggested that the cycle of courses rotate one every four years. Document draft to be ready by the next meeting, September 21, 1999.

Per Agenda Item II - New Business:

A. 1. Robbins proposed that the Teaching Practicum be offered for 01 credit in the Fall term and offered for variable credit hours in the Spring term. However, the 01 credit for the Fall could be subject to increase based on working with a faculty member. Chatman suggested that this fall under an umbrella frequency for the two-year cycle of courses.

A. 2. Chatman proposed that "according to Dean Robbins in light of no course belonging to one professor" the Theory Development course be offered as a required course for the doctoral program curriculum. Discussion followed regarding course content.

Motion: To offer the Theory Development course in the Fall term as a required course and require only three hours of LIS 6279. There would be a Spring term Research course requirement. Each Academic Program Committee would be charged with looking at the particulars for the student's requirements in the area of an additional research course.

Moved: Jane Robbins

Seconded: Elfreda Chatman

Further discussion ensued with Summers stressing that the consultants recommended a second analysis course. McClure suggested a general structure be recommended from the committee allowing for flexibility in the student course work to support special research needs. Robbins further emphasized that methodology content be seriously considered in the second research course.

Action: Gluck and Bonnice will draft a statement regarding the second course requirement and bring to the committee for vote.

A.3. Summer seminars were discussed. Summers reminded the committee that students are welcome and do currently enroll for DIS credits. Bonnice pointed out that a survey was distributed to the doctoral students regarding summer seminar offerings. All respondents declared the desire for a summer seminar.

Action: Summers and Chatman will consider this under the two-year cycle document draft.

D. 1. Bonnice requested that a faculty member work with Bonnice and Maatta on the Intellectual Picnic planning. Gluck suggested that a new faculty member assume the project or he wold do it as coordinator of the program. Yu came forward and volunteered. After reviewing the role of the faculty member on this project, Yu declined. Bonnice suggested that Chatman continue with the project since she had already made suggestion for this year's speakers. Chatman accepted and offered for Yu to assist. Yu agreed.
