Report for Meeting Scheduled:
Friday, March 17, 2000 at 12:00 PM

  1. Called to Order: 12:00 PM

  2. Special Orders:
The meeting began with full and open discussion about the course proposal from Chuck McClure with respect to its nature and value as an FSU offering, the appropriateness as well as the implications of it being offered without prerequisites, and the possibility of it duplicating what is being done in LIS 5340. On all counts, "Evaluating Networked Information Services and Resources" passed muster with the Team and we unanimously agreed to recommend it for adoption by the faculty without prerequisites at the next faculty meeting, Wednesday. but it was felt that the faculty member proposing the course is best aware of the preparation of students necessary for a successful experience. We also discussed the wisdom and necessity for these proposals to contain the system of grading spelled out in point totals as did this one; unless it is the will of the instructor, this is not a requirement to our knowledge.

The concentrations were discussed with Dr. Besant supplying particulars about her work in modifying the concentrations in accord with suggestions received. The Team participated in further modification and refinement to the point that we feel that the set of concentrations are ready to be submitted for adoption by the faculty, again realizing that more discussion would ensue. It is our feeling that they serve as guides to what might be recommended to students choosing these careers and should be placed on the web; they should be given the publicity due any policy that affect students.

The matter of the recent questionnaires reflecting perception of curriculum coverage given to the ADA and disabilities, an element inherent in the practice of public institutions reflects the potential need for such issues to be addressed in future review of curriculum. It take its place with other elements such as community analysis or multicultural treatment possibly requiring further enumeration so that faculty understand which courses examine these elements and in what way.

Finally, the use of competencies in future examination of the curriculum was discussed, and it was found that there are some models to follow as in the case of the Florida competencies with respect to school information specialists and the Competencies for Special Librarians of the 21st Century.
