Report for Meeting Scheduled:
Friday, September 08, 2000 at 12:00 PM

  1. Called to Order: noon

  2. Special Orders:
This was an organizational meeting of the group for this year. We listed the following items as worthy of consideration for the 2000-2001 school year: Clarification of the Specialist Degree for non-media specialists; is there a possibility of having a degree title other than "education specialist" for those pursuing other areas of specialty? Investigate issues surrounding the important role of advanced classes for Master's students which may mean acceptance of smaller class sizes in these instances. Investigate continuing education possibilities especially those of London/Florence workshop programs during the summer. International Programs is particularly interested this and can provide assistance. Study the Master's curriculum for possible sequencing problems, articulation issues, and topics that may be under addressed or unaddressed. There is a need to make specific recommendations for faculty hires to fill the identified needs. [Note: this will be our major focus for the semester]

  3. Reports of Sub-Teams:

  4. Reports of Special Teams and other Team Business:

  5. Unfinished Business:

  6. New Business:
At our initial meeting, we reviewed and discussed two issues that were brought to our attention by the deans: 1) What should be done about the current Foundations Course 5230 which is now a six hour course but being offered in two separate units? The recommedation of this team which will be taken to the faculty meeting September 27 is that the course remain in its present state (one six-hour course, but offered in two distinct segments) There appears to be no commanding reason for the course to be formally divided into two separate courses, especially since students must take both segments during their first term. Also, it seems that the single grade now given for the six hour course favors the student who may have done badly on one of the two segments. However, in this connection, the committee (team) strongly recommends that each segment be taught by an experienced faculty member with "experienced" defined as any faculty member who has successfully passed the 3 year review process. The team felt strongly that new students should be exposed to seasoned faculty members at this stage in their school careers. 2) A proposal for a joint law/lis degree received the enthusiastic approval of the team members; this will be taken to the September faculty meeting for a faculty vote.

  7. Announcements:
The team leader will provide members with copies of the team's Purpose as well as the proposed joint degree statement and a summary of the items discussed during the meeting. Members will also receive copies of the issues identified for our attention this term. The team will meet again on October 6th at 12:15 PM

  8. Adjourned: 1:30
