Jeff gave a brief status report on the three major issues the team
has been working on. The first issue has to do the question of who
is going to teach LIS5230 (Foundation) and it is one of the agenda
items during the faculty retreat (2/9-10). The second issue was the
task of curriculum revision. This too will be discussed during the
retreat in light of the overall program vision and misson statements.
The third item was whether we should get ourselves involved in the
contiuning education arena. After initial investigation by the team,
it was clear that the current level of faculty and staff resource is
way too insufficient to undertake a major program like that. We
decided to wait a couple more years to revisit the issue.
Jeff asked for input for the faculty retreat in terms of issues or
discussion items need to be considered. Stephanie suggested that
having data on the changes in the type of courses students have been
taking and courses cancelled over the last several years will be
helpful in determining where we should be headed. She used two categories of courses--technology v. traditional--and noted demand for traditional courses has been decreased quite a bit. She also remarked that
we really don't have problems recruiting library students but projecting
the school as a premiere information science school has been a challenge.
She had the impression that many students who entered the program as library
major tend to shift to information science during their study. At any rate,
we should have some data as starting points for the discussion at the retreat.
Linda suggested that we may be able to offer "traditional courses" at our
overseas locations. There wasn't any further discussion on this.
Some team members were not aware of the committee report submitted by
Margie Thomas in relation to the specialist degree. Better communication
among team members on the issues is recommended.
The next team meeting will occur either on 2/16 or 2/23.
