REPORT OF MASTER'S AND SPECIALIST TEAM MEETING -MARCH 4, 2001
Revisiting the Master's Curriculum
Much discussion and thoughtful suggestions from our faculty guests resulted in the following new plan for restructuring the Master's Degree. PLEASE GIVE US YOUR COMMENTS OR IDEAS ON THE FOLLOWING ASAP.
There should be a single Master's Degree (as stated earlier), but the divisions within this degree will be at the Track or Focus level. Below is a tentative list of Tracks and their sub-areas that were identified at the meeting:
1. School Media and Youth Services
2. Information Architecture - includes
Web Development
Archives and Records Management
Information Organization
3. Information Resources and Services - includes
Reference Services
Collection Management
4. Information Technology - includes
Networks and Telecommunications
IR Systems
Database Management
Questions remaining:
Where does Management fit into this grouping? Should Track 5 be Information Management?
Is it possible to have pre-reqs for individual tracks/courses that must be completed before the student is eligible? Even if these are not offered in our school; a programming language, for instance, for the Information Technology track?
Does this effectively specify the tracks and their components (for instance, does web development belong in track 4?) We anticipate considerable course cross-over, but initial assignment of courses to separate tracks may have to be examined periodically as the curriculum is revised.
What about the core that will support this structure? What are the courses that are to be required of everyone?
Should the present 6 hour format be retained? Most in the meeting agreed that perhaps individual courses might better serve a new structure? If this is done, what does need to be included in the core? (One suggestion was the need for an ethics and policy component with this or a related title to distinguish it from basic management)
What current courses can be combined, rewritten, or enlarged? Which new courses should be added? Which courses need to be deleted altogether?
