  7. Unfinished Business:
    The Master's & Specialist Team made the following decisions and recommendations: (1) Team Purpose Statement: Delete all but the first two sentences and reverse the order of those two sentences. The purpose now reads: Recommend to faculty new or revised policies, regulations, or course offerings. Review Master's and Specialist Student admission, financial support, and other issues related to Master's and Specialist students. (2) Summers' Award Decided to accept 25 students for consideration this year (although guidelines say the top 20) because 25 have straight 4.0 averages. Dean Latham will contact these 25 students, as laid out in the guidelines, to submit an essay. A sub-committee consisting of John Gathegi, Jeff Shim, and Susanne Houff will screen the applications to make recommendations to the fauclty as a whole per guidelines. (3) School Media Statistics Marcella Genz will request at the Dean's Council that the graduation approval form include record of whether a student plans to seek or has sought certification as a media specialist. Also record of which concentration a student has completed. Statistics are to be compiled annually. Eliza will provide numbers of students in her school collection development courses, information needs of young adults course, and management school media sections over the past year to provide an estimate of numbers of students seeking this certification. (4) Orientation Team recommends to the faculty that · Orientation start two weeks before the beginning of fall semester classes (Aug 11 in 2003); · Goals from last year be retained with the additional goal of acquainting students with the School's curriculum; (Prior goals to be continued were to introduce the field of information studies; get 100% participation; build community among students; include 2nd year students as mentors for first year; involve all faculty; and help students gain facility in use of technology, web interface, and information resources); · Most of the orientation continue online; · Some focused portion of the orientation, primarily for local students but with online students invited, be held in Tallahassee; · Discussions be a mixture of asynchronous and synchronous discussion. Michelle Kazmer and Aimee Reist will serve as representations to the joint Master's-Specialist/Student Services Team to plan the 2003 orientation. Marcella Genz read and informally summarized the open-ended questions. This information will be provided to the Orientation Planning Team. The follow-up survey of students should be conducted during October or November, be web-based, and have responses automatically cumulated, if possible.

  8. New Business:
    (5) Concentrations and Core The following team members will write an introduction (2 - 4 pages) to each concentration for posting on the web and advising. It will provide historical development, courses, and possible careers associated with the concentration. It will later be formatted for best use of web technology.
