  1. Called to Order: 9:00 AM

  2. Special Orders:
    1. Maatta suggests that the Department do something to recognize Lori Clark of CPD for her help with graduate registration above and beyond the call of duty.

  3. Reports of Sub-Teams:

  4. Reports of Special Teams and other Team Business:

  5. Unfinished Business:
    1. Wrapping up old business:

    - Hurston explains the new midterms evaluation form and how it will be used to evaluate peers and GA's.
    - Recruitment of Specialist students: currently in limbo, will be resumed. - FAMU à Stephanie will track down (draft) letter of introduction to Lauren Sapp. Burnett suggests attaching this to the Gates and Spectrum info packets. Burnett explains the Gates Award and the nomination process for the award. First time offered. Both minority graduates and (more than likely) undergraduates are eligible.
    - Fall Orientation à Stephanie and Janet are formulating dates. Two blocks: a two-day face-to-face session (for administrative issues; FSU cards, garnet accounts, etc.) and second block consisting of sever two-hour electronic interactive sessions. Burnett suggests formation of small group to firm up and coordinate dates for all orientation activities.

  6. New Business:
    1. Dropping Students for not having prerequisites and other policies for which we need faculty support- Discussion: Burnett will take this problem before the next faculty meeting. It is essential to get them to understand that this will be better for the students, and provide a richer learning experience. How do we better manage the add/drop process à especially dropping students when they lack necessary prerequisites (cracking down), and informing them in good time AND setting them on the right path. The Faculty Advisor's word should be final. Perhaps keep the add/drop slips out of the reach of the general public.

    2. New Undergraduate Program Proposal:

    - To design and implement a minority mentoring program. Weekends and evenings to work with minority students and provide academic support.
    - This semester will be the pilot.
    - Toughen up the Intro level courses, both in terms of attendance and engagement.

Burnett suggests forming a subgroup to look at the waiting lists and dates of enrollment. Then come up with a proposal by next meeting to be ready to implement in the summer term.

    3. Discussion on Lack of student groups to host potential employer encounters: Should we host a small SIS -only job fair. Inherent issue in this is that we handle in-state and out-of-state recruiters differently. Speak to Susan Epstein about job fair logistics. Submit all ideas to Pam as she is on the committee.

  7. Announcements:

  8. Adjourned: 9:40 AM
