Team discussed the following:
Waiting list:
Latham recommended putting the undergraduate and graduate waiting lists online - we have the database management system to manage the data. We will drop ineligible students and "0" cap the courses now to allow eligible students to get in now and reduce activity during drop/add.
Morgan reported on her research of IS programs at other institutions - she found some that have a waiting list online.
Student services/Career services:
Morgan reported that other institutions have no evaluation online. Most have similar resources to ours. She found none that had internship information or applications online. UCLA has an internship open house. Other institutions post course # changes in the Student Service area. Some have a section for job posting. Chavez-Hernandez reported that the University of Alabama makes post-graduate job/career information available. Alabama also has a Student Advisory Committee that functions as a liaison to faculty and manages certain events. They also have a Graduate School Seminar designed for prospective students to explore the major - it is conducted every day for a certain period of time (e.g., one week). Latham will look into developing a job bulletin board online.
Houff will check with Susan Epstein in the Career Center about what we're currently doing about career opportunities and what we could be doing better. Chavez-Hernandez reported we will soon have a link with CEO opportunities available via the Career Center. She added that someone from the Career Center is coming in two weeks or so to address resume writing/interviewing/salary negotiation. Martaus said that the ALA Chapter is hosting a Career Center presentation in Spring 2002. Fontaine reported that Goldstein Library gets PDF files about job postings.
Latham will talk to Dr. Robbins and Dr. Burnett about online resources in support of student services.
Student survey:
Besant will email her feedback about the student survey items for team review. Chavez-Hernandez reported that she and Laurie Bonnici will collaborate on a survey that combines items related to distance learning and student services. The team agreed that student feedback is valuable input for strategic planning. The Survey Team tentatively will meet Wednesday, 11/21 - time TBA.
Needs of advisors and role of faculty:
Morgan will continue polling faculty about their perception of their role.
Scholarships:
Besant reported that the scholarship sub-team assembled and categorized a comprehensive list of scholarships and their criteria. Houff will get info from FSU-PC and the Financial Aid Office on how they handle scholarship applications and evaluations. The new procedures need to be in place by March 2002. The Scholarship Team will meet Wednesday, 12/5/01, at 3pm.
The team decided there are no action items to go to faculty right now.
Staffing:
Latham suggested that Mark Davis should be added to the team. For one, he's putting together a Career Fair for the Spring 2002 term for undergraduates and graduate students.
Strategic planning:
The team identified some items of interest for the strategic planning initiative: recruiting, staffing for career advising and coordination of continuing education, facilities and equipment needs, and the growing demand for continuing professional development courses.
Next meeting: TBA
