Undergraduate Program Team Meeting Report

Back to Team Page

The first meeting of the Undergraduate Committee met today and Gary Burnett was chosen as the Team Leader. Absent from the first meeting were J. Shim, A. Robbin, and Beth Deeb.

Items addressed were:

1. New Course in Technical Writing - it was suggested that the course carry a 3000 number to attract students from elsewhere in the university; prerequisites should be two English courses: English comp and a second level course. Before we ask for approval for this course as a Gordon rule course in English it was decided that it will be offered a few times as is to iron out any wrinkles. It will be listed in all tracks, but will not be a required course in any.

The course syllabus will be posted electronically for the committee to view before a final vote is taken.

2. The dean's suggestion that a new name be given to the undergraduate program taken from Ohio State. Todd said the number is one that exists in Florida but is not currently being used here at FSU. The team will investigate further.

3. It was also suggested that the team look into reexamining and reaffirming the goals and priorities of the undergrad program.

4. The problem of making sure that undergraduates understand the Academic Honor Code was raised and it was decided that until another solution is found, the faculty would be given a copy of a form currently in use in some courses. The form gives a brief explanation of honor code definitions and requires a student signature to verify that the student understands just what plagiarism entails.

5. It was requested that more detailed course descriptions be written by faculty course sponsors for in-house use. This would help students and advisors understand just what is being covered in IS courses.

Further necessary action will be taken by the team at future meetings.
