Florida State University - College of Information

Graduate Assistants at the School of Information Studies

Beginning Fall 2002, graduate assistance for faculty in support of their teaching, research and service will be provided through the graduate assistants assigned to the library, computer labs and student services. Assistant Dean for Administrative Services Bob Brooks will coordinate selection and appointment of graduate assistants. If you have funding and wish to hire a graduate research assistant, please contact him as far in advance as you can. Graduate assistant appointments are typically made several months prior to the start of the semester. You will need to have sufficient funding to provide a stipend for .25 or .5 FTE and the waiver of tuition for the student. Information regarding these costs is available from either Bev Tranchand, our Research Services Administrator or Ellen Habib, our Administrative Services Coordinator.

Teaching support

Most teaching faculty have been assigned a teaching assistant to assist with course support. Teaching assistant appointments are made for graduate courses that enroll at least 50 students and undergraduate courses that enroll at least 60 students. If you have not been assigned a TA, or if you've been assigned a TA but you need some extra support to meet occasional needs outside of what your TA may be available to provide (e.g., copying of course materials, creation of a reference list, help with a course website), follow the instructions under the heading Requesting Support.

Research Support

Support for research will be provided by our experienced staff of Graduate Assistants assigned to the library, computer labs, and student services. Library assignments will be coordinated by Aimee Reist, Goldstein Librarian, Computer support assignments by Anthony Chow, User Services Manager, and other support assignments by Ellen Habib, Administrative Services Coordinator. To request research support, follow the instructions under the heading Requesting Support. Requests for research support will be given top priority. Please help our staff to better help you by providing as much lead time on requests as you can.

University and Professional Service Support

Support for service to the university and to meet professional obligations is also available through our Graduate Assistants. To request service support, follow the instructions under the heading Requesting Support. While we recognize the importance of the service our faculty provides to the university and professional organizations, service requests will be considered lower priority than teaching and research support requests. It is essential that you provide as much lead time as possible on service requests.
