Specialist Degree (Post-Master's)
The Specialist degree is not ALA accredited because the ALA only accredits programs at the Master's level.
Application Deadlines: Application deadlines are the dates by which all application materials must be received at FSU.
Admission to the Specialist degree is for fall and spring only. Fall: priority deadline is June 1; final deadline is July 1. Spring deadline: November 1.
NOTE:
- If you completed a Master's degree at FSU less than 7 years prior to applying, you can make an Application for Readmission. (Carefully read and follow the instructions at Readmission Requirements.)
- If you earned a Master's other than at FSU or you earned a Master's degree at FSU seven (7) or more years prior to applying, you will have to complete the University application for graduation admission. (Follow the instructions below).
Admission to the College's Specialist degree program requires approval of both the University and the College of Information. Read carefully and follow ALL the steps below.
- Submit the online University application for graduate admission. APPLY NOW
- Pay the application fee. The application will not be processed until you have paid the fee.
- Upload the required documents in the University application under Supporting Documents.
The University application will not be processed without the required Supporting Documents.
- Submit to the Office of Admissions two (2) official transcripts from every college/university at which you took courses, whether you earned a degree there or not.
- Submit to the Office of Admissions an official report of your GRE scores (verbal & quantitative).
Minimum Admission Requirements
- A minimum 3.2 GPA (4.0=A) on a Master's degree from a college/university meeting national and/or regional standards for accreditation.
- A minimum combined GRE score of 1000 on the verbal and quantitative sections. All students must submit GRE scores.
- Three (3) letters of recommendation. At least one should be from faculty with whom you took a course and at least one from a current or recent employer. (See details in the Supporting Documents section of the online application.)
- A current resume or curriculum vitae. (See details in the Supporting Documents section of the online application.)
- A writing sample. (See details in the Supporting Documents section of the online application.)
Meeting the minimum required GPA and GRE scores does not guarantee admission to the program. Admission is competitive and applicants are evaluated on ALL parts of the application, including the Supporting Documents. Applicants must demonstrate academic ability, focus, interest, commitment and other evidence that they can succeed in our graduate program and contribute to the profession.
International Students only: Applicants whose native language is not English must submit a minimum TOEFL score of 600 on the written exam, 250 on the computer exam, or 100 on the internet exam. This requirement may be waived with documentation of successful completion of at least one academic year of study in a country whose official language is English.
