Assistantships

The College of Information provides a limited number of assistantships for graduate students at the master's, specialist's, and doctoral levels. You must complete an application to be considered for an assistantship.

Types of Assistantships

  • Teaching: working with a faculty member teaching a course, grading, and other assigned duties.
  • Research: working with a faculty member assisting with research-related activities.
  • Graduate. working in the College's library, computer laboratories, administrative offices, and student services.

Compensation

  • Stipend: Graduate assistants typically receive a stipend of $12,500 for a full-year appointment (fall, spring, and summer semesters) at half time (20 hours per week). Some of these appointments require working between semesters.
  • Waiver: Graduate assistants typically receive a matriculation and out-of-state tuition waiver for 9 hours.

Note: Stipend and waiver amounts depend upon funding availability and are subject to change.

Eligibility

To be eligible, a student must have regular graduate status. Special and provisional students are ineligible.

To remain eligible, a student must

  • maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA and
  • perform satisfactorily in the position to which they are assigned. The person to whom the student reports determines satisfactory performance.

Research Assistantship -- Application Process

Faculty members who have a grant and want to hire a research assistant generally will contact the student. You may also contact faculty to see if they have an opening for a research assistant.

Teaching and Graduate Assistantships -- Application Process

  • Application: Please download the application in PDF format from the link below if you want to be considered for a teaching or graduate assistantship.

  • Due dates:
    • Teaching Assistantships: March 15 for consideration for starting in the fall.
    • Graduate Assistantships: March 15 for summer, July 1 for fall, and November 1 for spring.
    • Research Assistantships: varies based on when faculty receive a grant.
  • Submission:
    • Submit your application to Student Services, Graduate Program Assistant, Delores Bryant.
    • You may scan your completed application and email it to Ms. Bryant at bryant@ci.fsu.edu.

    • Ms. Bryant collects applications for distribution and review by faculty and supervisors of functional areas. She can answer general questions about applying for an assistantship; however, you should contact the people below for specific questions.

Graduate Assistants

i-TEC Services (Help Desk & User Services): Denis Burns, supervisor of i-TEC services, selects applicants to fill graduate assistant positions in i-TEC Services. CI-Reception Desk: Shonda Sampson, Coordinator of Finance, selects applicants to fill graduate assistant positions at the Reception Desk in the Office of the Deans.
