Project Athena Fellowships

Project Athena is a fellowship program for doctoral students. It is funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, a federal agency. The project focuses on recruiting and educating the doctoral students who will make up the next generation of Library and Information Studies faculty.

Six students will be chosen for the project. The Florida State University, the University of Illinois, and the University of Washington are collaborating to develop the fellowship program and its recruitment model. Each school will recruit two students. Students are encouraged to contact all three programs for more information.

Each fellowship includes a tuition waiver (in-state or out-of-state) and a stipend of $6,300 for the academic year. Students must pay their own fees. Fellowship recipients are expected to serve as half-time teaching assistants during the academic year. In addition, students will have the opportunity to attend the Program on Instructional Excellence (PIE) workshops, which are held each fall, and will be able to participate in the School's teaching instruction program.

Qualifications for the Fellowship include:

  • a minimum 3.2 undergraduate GPA or 3.5 graduate GPA;
  • strong recommendations by former and/or current teachers
  • a combined score of at least 1150 on the GRE or its equivalent on another appropriate measure.

To be considered for a College Teaching Fellowship, your application to the Ph.D. program and the online application for the College Teaching Fellowship must be submitted by June 15th.
