All students in the school library media program are required to complete an internship in a school library media center. The supervised student teaching internship (LIS 5945) takes place in the last semester of study. Students who already hold a valid state teaching certificate are required to complete a 3-credit internship, consisting of a variety of independent projects under the supervision of a certified mentor. It is possible to complete this internship while working full-time as either a teacher or media specialist.
Experience working in a school library media center cannot be substituted for LIS 5945.
Requirements
1. Admission to FSU Teacher Education
In order to complete an internship in a school library media center the student must be admitted to teacher education in the FSU College of Education. University criteria include:
- A baccalaureate degree from an approved college/university.
- A 2.5 grade point average (undergraduate)
- Either:
- a minimum score on the GRE of 1000 or
- a passing score on all sections of the CLAST or
- a passing score on the PRAXIS I (locations of U.S. testing centers)
or
- General Knowledge examinations
(waivers and alternative means of meeting requirements are not acceptable)
- Complete an application for teacher education
2. Register for LIS 5945 for 3 credits.
3. Mentor
Students must find an MLS certified school library media specialist to collaborate with them on their internship. The mentor will assist the student in planning and executing required projects, and verify they have been completed satisfactorily. Mentors can be from within the student’s school or district, or a neighboring school. In certain circumstances, it may be necessary to identify a virtual mentor.
4. Independent Projects
At the beginning of the internship, students will be provided with a list of required projects that incorporate the Florida Educator Accomplished Practices. Students will have the entire semester to complete the projects, and be provided with a form that is signed and dated by the mentor upon completion of each project.
