All students in the school library media program are required to complete an internship in a school library media center. The supervised student teaching internship (LIS 5945) takes place in the last semester of study. The 6-credit internship is required of all students who do not hold a valid teaching certificate. The internship can be completed either full-time(5 days a week; entire school day) for 10 weeks or part time for 15 weeks.
Experience working in a school library media center cannot be substituted for LIS 5945.

Students are informed officially about their placement by the School Media Internship Coordinator, about the middle of the term preceding the internship experience.
The assignment of an intern in a school is a decision made cooperatively by the supervising library media specialist, the principal, and the district and university representatives after each has studied the information included in the application form. In accordance with University policy, interns are placed only with those teachers who are qualified and willing to accept this responsibility.
Additionally, the College of Information works closely with the College of Education's Office of Clinical Experiences (OCE) to secure appropriate internship sites. Students may find it helpful to become informed of general guidelines pertaining to expectations of student interns. However, specific assignments and requirements are determined by the College of Information.
- The intern should contact the supervising library media specialist before the internship officially begins, for the purposes of planning the intern's experiences. It is important for the supervising library media specialist to share appropriate materials, information about the student population, school policies, and information about various relevant aspects of the library media program.
