Florida State University - College of Information

Specialist Degree

The Specialist Degree is a post-master's degree. Students who pursue it are interested in becoming aware of new areas within the field of information studies. They are also interested in improving or developing skills and additional competencies in the field. As a result of this focus, you will acquire the knowledge and competencies to perform at high levels within your specialization. The program is planned cooperatively with faculty members who will help tailor the program to meet your professional needs.

For a broad overview of where we think careers in the field are headed, please see the description of the Information Technology (I.T.) Specialist and the Dynamic Librarian under Digital Age Information Professions. We have compiled admissions requirements and applications for U.S. Students and International Students. If you have additional questions, please contact Graduate Student Services.

Hours
30 hours (Note: Up to 15 of these hours may be taken outside the College in other FSU departments with the approval of the faculty advisor.)

Time to Completion

The Specialist degree must be completed within seven (7) years from the time the student registers for graduate credits after being admitted to the degree program.

Plan of Study
Students enrolled in the Specialist Degree program should consider their individual needs and professional development in the selection of courses offered either in the College of Information or in another department.  Specialist students are required to plan a program of study in consultation with their faculty advisor during the first semester of coursework. A copy of the program plan should be sent to Graduate Student Services to be put in the student's file.
