Teaching & Learning with Blackboard

Request a course website - Use the "FSU Bb Course Request Module" from your home tab in BlackBoard. If you don't see it, you can activate it by going to the "Modify Content" button and scrolling down the list. Once you find it, check the box and submit it. Then, use the request a course website link to walk you through the process of initiating new courses.
Some other useful modules that you may want to "check" include:
- FSU Course Evaluation (Faculty Version)
View SUSSAI Evaluation Results.
- What's New
Displays items that have been added or changed recently in the courses in which the user is enrolled, i.e. - discussion boards. By default, new items from all courses for which you are enrolled will display in the module. You will want to edit which courses are shown by clicking on the edit button and selecting/deselecting courses to display only those you wish to view.
Using the Content Collection system toorganize content for your courses
Think of it as your own personal virtual hard drive--this is the basic premise of the Content Collection tab in Blackboard. You can store content for all of your courses in one place and, instead of embedding content directly into your course, you can link to the files you have stored in your Content Collection. This makes sharing content with multiple courses easy and allows you to update documents in one place. The Content Collection System also allows users to set permissions to allow others to collaborate and share data.

Here are an assortment of different Blackboard tutorials that can be found online. They all contain basically the same information, but you may find one you like using more than another.
Face to face Blackboard training is also available. View the schedule and register for a Blackboard Workshop at the Center for Teaching and Learning's website. |
Using Turnitin - Blackboard module that helps prevent plagiarism by identifying work containing unoriginal material.
ELLUMINATE LIVE! - Available to faculty and students of the College of Information, Elluminate Live is a real-time, synchronous, virtual classroom environment. Audio, video, chat, whiteboard, and application sharing are only a few of the features offered by Elluminate Live.
Here are the general steps you need to go through to use it.
- Elluminate System Requiremnts - Elluminate works with Windows, Macintosh, Linux, and Solaris clients. Please view the Elluminate minimum system requirements page for more information.
- Make sure you have access to Elluminate: Elluminate is located under "commincation" >>"Elluminate Live". If you do not see it there, please contact jbarrager@fsu.edu.
- Sign up for Moderator Training: In order to use Elluminate for online classroom instruction, you will need to complete moderator training I and II each of which is about an hour long. Moderator training III is optional in that it provides training on advanced tools that are not required for getting started with a basic session. Elluminate offers live, online moderator training and their website. View the Elluminate training schedule and register for moderator training.
- Scheduling an Elluminate Session: Elluminate sessions must be self-scheduled via your course website. Sessions can be scheduled as needed. It is not necessary to schedule all of your sessions for the semester in advance. View a quick tutorial on scheduling Elluminate Session in Blackboard.
- Download the Moderator Users Manual
OTHER IMPORTANT ELLUMINATE INFORMATION:
Sign up for a Vroom: The Ellluminate Vroom is a free, fully functional Elluminate room designed for any 3 people to use at one time. Along with the participant limit, the only feature not available is the ability to records sessions-- othewise, students recieve a fully functional room with moderator privledges. Students who inquire about attending Elluminate courses will be encouraged to sign up for their own Vroom to allow them to make an informed decision about taking an Elluminate course. Once they have signed on for the Elluminate course, their Vroom access will allow them to experience Elluminate and make sure that any troubleshooting issues can be taken care of before classes begin. Additionally, once the semester has begun these same students will already have their own virtual Elluminate space to use for group work or other non-synchronized classroom activities.
PRIVATE MESSAGES: THE ABILITY TO VIEW (OR NOT VIEW) PRIVATE MESSAGES IS DETERMINED DURING SESSION SCHEDULING!!!!
Our students are used to the idea that their private messages are private, so please take care to make sure you set this option appropriately when scheduling your session. If you do forget to set the privacy function and you suddenly begin to see private messages between students after the session begins, you do have the ability to change your view to show "public" instead of the default show "all" messages. The top of the chat box has a drop down menu that allows you to change the view from "all" to "public". Please remember also that your view is also the recorded view if you are archiving, so setting your view to "public" will hide private messages
