Thinking about signing up for an Elluminate Class?
As you may have heard, some online courses at the College of Information have begun using Elluminate Live! a real-time, synchronous, virtual classroom environment. Audio, video, chat, whiteboard, and application sharing are only a few of the features offered by Elluminate Live. But how do you decide if you want to take an Elluminate course?
Sign up for a Vroom First : The Ellluminate Vroom is a free, fully functional Elluminate virtual classroom designed for any 3 people to use at one time. Students who are interested in attending an Elluminate course at the College of Information are encouraged to sign up for their own Vroom and try it out beforehand with some friends. This will allow you to experience the Elluminate environmennt before making a committment and allow you to make an informed decision about taking an Elluminate course. Additionally, access to this Vroom before your classes begin will allow you to make sure that any troubleshooting issues can be taken care of before day one. Lastly, once the semester has begun you can continue to use your personal vroom for group work or other non-synchronized classroom activites.
Elluminate System Requiremnts - Elluminate works with Windows, Macintosh, Linux, and Solaris clients. Please view the Elluminate minimum system requirements page for more information.
Elluminate Software/Hardware Requirements:
Elluminate is a java based application and a user only needs to have a java enabled browser and an internet connection to use it. If you're not sure if your browser is java enabled go to this page and it will check for you: http://www.elluminate.com/support/. First time users will also need to follow the prompts for first time users to set up their audio levels and connection speed.
The participant (student) guide has detailed instructions for participants on how to access and use the system. Please download and review this guide to practice in your vroom so that you can be prepared on the first day.
The system has the ability to do both chat and audio and the decision to use one or the other (or both) is at the discretion of the instructor. If audio is going to be used, however, it is strongly suggested that each user have a headset with an attached microphone. Users with a Mac will need a microphone/headset that uses a USB port. These do not have to be expensive; a five dollar headset works just fine. Although it is possible to use desktop speakers with a microphone on a stand, the audio delay for them when they, themselves speak can be extremely distracting ( I couldn't do it!).
Lastly, although we have thoroughly tested and found the system to work well on a variety of platforms and connection speeds (including dialup) the system doesn't work well on wireless (especially during peak internet use hours during the evening). You may want to advise your students that if they are using a wireless system that they may want to purchase an Ethernet cable so that they can plug directly into their modem for the sessions.
