All initial certification as a school media specialist takes place at the master’s level. The master’s degree program at FSU is a 36-credit program for certified teachers and a 48-credit program for those who are not certified teachers. The Project LEAD option adds an additional 9 credits to both programs.

The master’s degree option is designed to develop leadership, analytical, and reflective skills that will facilitate professional practice as well as success in National Board Certification when the time comes for those interested in this certification. (National Board Certification requires a minimum of three years on the job.) The leadership stand of courses includes the following 3-credit courses in addition to other LIS requirements:

• Information Leadership
• The Instructional Role of the Information Specialist (Project LEAD version)
• Leadership in Reading
• Leadership in Technology
